INC Sustainability Institute launch marks a new chapter for the global nut industry

The international nut and dried fruit sector has taken a significant step forward in aligning global sustainability efforts, with the launch of the INC Sustainability Institute for Nuts & Dried Fruit. Announced at the 2025 INC Congress in Spain, the initiative was developed by the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC) to drive long-term, responsible growth and deliver positive impact across the sector.

Weather and orchard conditions drive major crop revision

Australia’s mid-season macadamia crop forecast has been sharply downgraded, as growers and processors manage one of the most difficult and unpredictable seasons in recent years. Continued weather-related disruptions mean the true extent of available supply is difficult to determine at this stage. As a result, the revised forecast now anticipates production will fall within a range of 37,300 to 41,970 tonnes in-shell at 3.5% moisture (40,000 to 45,000 tonnes in-shell at 10% moisture), down from the previous estimate of 55,960 tonnes in-shell at 3.5% moisture (60,000 tonnes in-shell at 10% moisture).

About macadamias

Around 60 million years ago, in the fertile soil of Australia’s north east coast the world’s first macadamias evolved. An ancient rainforest treasure, they were first traded commercially in Australia in the 1960s and remain the only native Australian crop to ever have been traded on a significant scale internationally as a commercial food product.
